SC orders action against Taliban, armed groups in Karachi

November 3, 2012 – The Supreme Court has ordered the Sindh government to take immediate action against all armed groups in Karachi, including the Taliban. In an interim order issued Saturday, the Supreme Court’s bench hearing the Karachi law and order case directed the provincial government to arrest all prisoners released on parole and present them before it.

The SC has also instructed the Home Ministry and Inspector General Sindh to arrest the prisoners released on payrole and to present them in the court. The Court also ordered issuing non-bailable warrants of the criminals released on parole and asked the law enforcement to deal with criminals and Talibanwith iron hands.

Earlier, IG Sindh had presented a report on 7,000 Taliban infiltrating Karachi after the court had ordered for it. The bench, in its order, stated that the police and other law enforcement agencies had failed in providingsecurity to the citizens.

According to a report published in a local daily on Saturday, the banned extremist outfit Tehrik-i-TalibanPakistan (TTP) are known to be gaining in strength in the metropolis, recruiting family members of target killing victims to boost their numbers.

The order also stated that action against unregistered vehicles should be initiated and instructed to issue the relevant documents and number plates at the time of registration of vehicles. The interim order also directed the concerned authorities to submit a monthly vehicle fitness report in the court.

It further directed the Sindh government to take immediate steps to protect the citizens against targeted killings. Moreover, the court also ordered that all arms licenses should be computerised. Police and other relevant departments were also instructed to take action against illegal immigrants in Karachi
