Michigan: Meteorite worth about USD 100,000 was used a doorstop for decades at a farm in Michigan. The meteorite was thought as just a rock and was used as a doorstop.

The owner out of curiosity took the rock which he had kept for 30 years for inspection Central Michigan University.

Professor Dr Monaliza Sirbescu from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences said that the 10.2kg space rock was the biggest meteorite she had been asked to examine in her career.

After hearing the news of meteorites hunters finding shards and selling for thousands of dollars, the man got curious about his rock and it inspired him to have his rock examined as well.

The meteorite was valued at USD100,000

Most meteorites typically consist of approximately 90-95% iron.

What makes the meteorite found in Michigan unique is that it is 88% iron and 12% nickel.

The university spokesperson has said that the farmer had recovered it sometime in the 1930s. The rock used as a doorstop for decades has turned out to be Michigan’s sixth-largest meteorite.

Twelve have been found in the state, the release said. The new owner came into possession of the meteorite after the farm was sold in 1988.
