Angelina Jolie Visits Rohinya Muslim Refugee Camps

BANGLADESH: The Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie visited Rohinya Muslim refugee camps in Bangladesh on Tuesday.

Addressing the crowd of refugees she expressed her complete disapproval for the world’s failure to prevent a crisis that saw 730,000 people driven from their homes.

She addressed the crowd on a hilltop in Kutapalong camp in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district which is said to be the world’s largest refugee settlement.

She said

“Humbled and proud to stand with you today”.

“You have every right not to be stateless and the way you have been treated shames us all,” , she also added the crisis was due to decades of discrimination that had gone unaddressed.
“What is most tragic about this situation is that we cannot say we had no warning.”

Angelina Jolie also said she had met the stateless Rohingya who are “treated like cattle” in Myanmar.

Jolie also met a rape survivor in Mayanmay who told her ‘you would have to shoot me where I stand before I would go back to Myanmar’.

In her address she urged the Myanmar authorities to show the sincere commitment to bring an end to the violence and displacement. She also urged the authorities to improve conditions for all communities in Rakhine state, including the Rohingya.

U.N. refugee agency special envoy Angelina Jolie visited the camp as the United Nations is preparing for a new appeal for $920 million to support the refugees. The refugees had fled Myanmar in August 2017.

Myanmar denies the charges laid by the U.N. investigators for carrying out mass killings and rapes.
