IHC grants bail to Ahsan Iqbal and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court granted bail (IHC) to PNL-N leaders Ahsan Iqbal and former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in corruption cases owing to the insufficient evidence submitted by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Ahsan Iqbal was granted bail against bonds worth Rs. 10 million in the Narowal Sports City corruption case after he was arrested by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) last year in December.

The case was heard today by a two judge bench of the of the Islamabad High Court that included Chief Justice IHC Athar Minullah who said that arresting a suspect for interrogation shows incompetance on the investigation officer’s part.

The Additonal Prosecutor General (AGP) NAB opposed the bail however agreed to it if Ahsan Iqbal handed over his passport and appeared at future summons.

In the case of former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the judge said that in the case against Abbasi, the Punjab Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules don’t apply as public funds weren’t used.

Abbasi was also granted bail against bonds worth Rs. 10 million.

The judge further added that there is no case since there was no use of public funds and the prosecution has failed to provide enough evidence.

Former Prime Minister Abbasi was also arrested last year over corruption case involving awarding a multi billion rupee import contract for LNG in 2013 while he was miniter for petroleum and natural resources during the PML-N tenure.
