New York mass graves for coronavirus victims

NEW YORK: Images and videos of New York mass graves for coronavirus have emerged showing dozens of coffins being buried in Hart Island.

The footage taken from the drone show workers in hazmat outfit are seen stacking up the coffins in deep trenches in Hart Island.

According to the authorities’ burial site Hart Island, 1.5km long island off the Bronx has been used for burial for people with no next-of-kin or families who cannot afford a funeral. The Island has been used for burial for more than 150 years.

The New York officials have also confirmed the coronavirus victims will be buried if their bodies aren’t claimed within two weeks.

Dozen of workers are seen in the footage digging and burying the coffins with names carved on them.

The death toll due to coronavirus have reached 5,280 in New York. Under new policy the bodies can kept in the storage for only 14 days. If unclaimed they will be shifted to mass grave sites.

These mass graves are also being called Trump’s mass graves by many.

Typically, twenty five bodies a week were buried, now twenty five or more are buried everyday. as the coronavirus death toll takes it peak.

 Jason Kersten, a spokesman for the Department of Correction, which oversees the burials has said the dead are wrapped in plastic bags before placing them inside pine caskets.

Each casket has the name of deceased scrawled in large letters. This will help with the identification is needed later.

They are then buried in long narrow trenches. Machines are used to dig these trenches.

Contract laborers are hired to perform this task as there is growing demand for burials now.
