Punjab Mosques violate 20 point agreement on Taraweeh

A survey conducted by the Pattan Development Organisation shows that over 80 percent of mosques in Punjab violated the 20 point agreement that was formed between the government and Ulema based on universal precautionary measures regarding congregational and Taraweeh prayers.

According to the report, as many as 40 surveyors obersved 194 mosques in 15 different cities across Punjab and even Islamabad. Some of these cities included Lahore, Faisalabad, Kamalia, Jhang, Layyah and Multan.

The survey consisted on just four of 20 point agreement and these are that Taraweeh prayers should be conducted within mosque premises and not on sidewalks or roads, a distance of at least six feet must be maintained between worshipers on all sides, everyone coming to the mosque should do ablution from home and everyone needs to wear face masks.

However, based on the survey at least 96 percent of mosques were found be holding Taraweeh prayers on pavements and roads where as 80 percent of people did not even wear face masks. As many as 72 percent of mosques were violating the six feet rule while 69 percent of mosques had people performing ablution.

Also, children were present in as many as two thirds of the mosques alongside elders clearly violating another rule which states that children and people above the age of 50 are not allowed.

Based on the report, these were usually mosques in remote and congested areas while mosques at centralized locations were seen following precautions mainly due to fear of getting caught.

However, this does not mean that all the other mosques do not carry the risk of spreading coronavirus and there should be a strict check to avoid making this outbreak even worse.
