Developers had access to Facebook data from inactive apps

Facebook data has been available to over 5,000 app developers beyond its 90 days expiry in case of inactivity according to a confirmation by the company.

The social media giant claims that it is clearly a violation of its privacy policies and claims the issue has now been fixed ensuring action against those developers responsible for using such data.

Facebook recently restricted the type of data data available to third-party developers when you login to other apps using Facebook. Earlier users had the option to decide what data they wanted to share with these apps although email and birth date was a requirement due to several reasons like determining if the person is old enough to use said apps.

Recently Facebook made some changes where this data was only to remain accessible to the developer or service for 90 days after which the third party app was automatically kept from having access to the information.

A blogspot from Facebook explained about the matter saying:

But recently, we discovered that in some instances apps continued to receive the data that people had previously authorized, even if it appeared they hadn’t used the app in the last 90 days. For example, this could happen if someone used a fitness app to invite their friends from their hometown to a workout, but we didn’t recognize that some of their friends had been inactive for many months,

Facebook is now working on making sure that the data shared with developers without user consent is limited.
