PUBG to remain banned in Pakistan: Update by PTA

ISLAMABAD: The online multiplayer game PlayersUnknown’s BattleGround or PUBG is to remain banned in Pakistan according to a press release by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

In its press release, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) states that the decision to keep PUBG banned in Pakistan comes after detailed hearing that was held on 9 July on the directions of the Lahore High Court (LHC).

The press release further states that PTA has approached the PUBG managed and asked for data about PUBG users and their game sessions in Pakistan. However, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), they are still awaiting for a response from PUBG.

PUBG was banned in Pakistan on 1 July 2020 following the suggestion by Lahore Capital Police Officer (CCPO) Zulfiqar Hameed according to whom the online multiplayer game was a waste of time and lead to negative psychological impact on children which had resulted in two suicides.

Even though the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) set up an email to listen to feedback about the ban and despite thousands of players protesting on social media to have PUBG unbanned, they have to decided to keep it blocked in Pakistan.

While the authorities are at a banning spree in the country, BIGO app was also banned by PTA while TikToK was issued a final warning to control objectionable content on its app. Furthermore, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has hinted towards the ban of YouTube in Pakistan.
