President Trump recently signed an executive order putting Huawei is their so called ‘Entity list’ which basically means that US companies are restricted from doing business with Huawei. According to the US government this was a matter of national security. Not long after the Huawei Ban in the US, Google said that it will no longer work with Huawei which means no support to Huawei for it’s Android OS. This caused a panic among Huawei Smartphone users around the globe of what will become of their smartphones.
Rest assured that all current phones in the market will remain unaffected by this ban as both Huawei and Google have put out statements reassuring users that all current devices will receive security updates and Google services such as Gmail and Google Play services. However, this does not necessarily mean that these devices will be getting future Android version updates. Google says that Huawei is still allowed to use the Android Open Source project but lately Google has been working close with smartphone manufacturers and this will just leave Huawei in the dark whenever a new version comes along.
For Huawei users’ questions regarding our steps to comply w/ the recent US government actions: We assure you while we are complying with all US gov’t requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device.— Android (@Android) May 20, 2019
@Android tweet about the issue
“Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.
A statement issued to TheVerge by Huawei
Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.
We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally.”
So current Huawei users can rest assured that their devices will continue to work. This will only affect future devices until a resolution is reached for US-China trade dispute.
