KARACHI: The city administration has announced a ‘no helmet, no entry’ policy on II Chundrigar Road, Karachi’s financial district, in an effort to regulate reckless motorcycle riding and ease of accidents.
The authorities have also put up delineators along the busy stretch so that they may assist in traffic regulation, as there are thousands of motorcyclists that utilize this area daily, and more so during peak hours. Although there are rules, riding without a helmet is common, along with careless driving, which accelerates frequent mishaps.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab mentioned that this is part of larger measures taken in order to reduce deadly accidents while also enforcing discipline. He further stated that “wearing helmets will be made compulsory on all main roads of Karachi in phases,” signaling that II Chundrigar Road is only the beginning of the sweep.

As of now, over a thousand accidents have already occurred this year in Karachi, leading to roughly 182 deaths and around 2,200 injuries. Of those, 57 were of people run over by heavy vehicles.
The authorities reinforced the fact that for the most part, larger vehicles abide by their lanes; the same cannot be said for motorcyclists, who put both themselves and those around them at greater risk.
The enforcement of the helmet rule is likely to happen in the course of a few days, and may spread to other significant highways as part of an extensive road safety initiative.
