The Pakistan Cricket Team’s performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been nothing short of disappointing. One after another, the team has suffered defeats, showing no intent or fight to win crucial matches. Not only have they lost momentum in the tournament, but they have also let down millions of passionate Pakistani fans who expected much more from the defending champions.
The team’s lackluster performances against strong opponents like New Zealand and India have exposed glaring weaknesses in both strategy and execution.
Captain Mohammad Rizwan’s recent press conference further highlighted the issues within the team. His admission that the team is “still in the learning process” in a major tournament like the ICC Champions Trophy is baffling, especially for a side that entered as defending champions.
The absence of collective effort, poor team selection, and an apparent lack of planning have been evident throughout the tournament. It’s clear that the team is struggling to find its footing, and the blame cannot be solely placed on the players.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) must take responsibility for this debacle. It is alarming that the board has failed to learn from past mistakes, particularly after the team’s underwhelming performance in last year’s World Cup. Instead of making bold decisions to revamp the team, the PCB has persisted with the same group of players who have consistently underperformed. This reluctance to make necessary changes has cost the team dearly, and it’s time for a complete overhaul.
Someone needs to step up and take accountability for this poor showing. Whether it’s the team management, the coaching staff, or the PCB itself, the current state of affairs cannot continue.
Pakistani cricket fans deserve better. The PCB must take decisive action to rebuild the team, inject fresh talent, and create a culture of accountability and excellence. The time for excuses is over—it’s time to act.
