LAHORE: The academic year for schools in Punjab maybe extended because of the long closure of educational institutions amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The possibility of extending the academic year for Punjab schools was announced by the provincial education minister Murad Raas at the inauguration of Digital Continuous Professional Development, which is an online programme for school teachers.
Schools across Pakistan are currently closed due to rising coronavirus cases during the second wave of infections gripping the country.
The education minister said that the final decision regarding reopening of schools will be taken during the first week of January 2021 at the Inter Provincial Education Ministers Conference.
Murad Raas stated that even though he was not in favor of schools closing down, the decision had to be made due to the worsening COVID-19 situation in the country.
Punjab reported 584 new coronavirus cases while 36 people have lost their lives to the deadly disease during the last 24 hours, bringing the province-wide tally of infections to 130,706 and death toll to 3,558.
