Punjab’s educational boards have announced on a significant initiative aimed at enhancing students’ English proficiency and aligning educational standards with global benchmarks. Beginning in 2025, matric exams for both science and arts streams across the province will be conducted exclusively in English.
This shift entails the gradual elimination of Urdu from question papers, ensuring a consistent language medium across all subjects. Moreover, starting in 2026, all optional subjects for FA exams will also be administered in English. Although formal approval for this policy is pending, educational authorities anticipate its endorsement during the forthcoming Punjab Boards Committee Chairmen (PBCC) meeting.
However, Rana Liaqat Ali, General Secretary of the Punjab Teachers Union, has voiced apprehensions regarding potential challenges associated with the language transition. He underscores the necessity of equipping teachers with adequate training to facilitate a seamless shift and minimizing the risk of student failure due to language barriers. Ensuring a smooth transition to English-medium instruction is crucial for enhancing educational outcomes and preparing students to thrive in an increasingly globalized world.
