In the latest rankings by Times Higher Education, at least 33 universities from Pakistan have been included, which is a decrease from the 40 institutions listed from the country in the previous year.
Both public and private universities, totaling more than two dozen, are featured in the rankings, which are released by the respected British magazine, Times Higher Education.
These rankings assess the top universities globally. This year, there have been significant updates to the methodology of the rankings.
In total, 673 universities are ranked in 2024, compared to 605 in 2023. Additionally, 499 institutions are listed but not ranked due to specific eligibility criteria.
Times Higher Education evaluates universities based on criteria such as research, teaching, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

For the second consecutive year, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore secures the top position in the league table. Hong Kong maintains a strong presence in the top 10, although individual university performances vary.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology drops to third place from its previous second, while the Hong Kong Polytechnic University falls to seventh from fourth. However, the City University of Hong Kong climbs two spots to fourth place.
On the other hand, France’s leading institutions show improvement, with Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris, its top performer, advancing to second place from third last year.
Turkey boasts the highest number of ranked institutions, with 58, followed by India with 55 and Iran with 46. The table includes 79 territories this year, up by one from 2023, with Ghana and Peru making their debut appearances.
