‘Search Light pictures’ has recently dropped an entrancing trailer for its highly anticipated period drama ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’. And, by the looks of it, the forthcoming venture is geared up for a ‘Nomadland’s’ competition. Starring Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield as televangelists Tammy Faye Bakker and Jim Bakker, the film is based on a real life narrative and is slated for a September 2021 release.
After winning Best Picture earlier this year with Nomadland, Searchlight Pictures have quite a slate lined up this fall including Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch and Guillermo Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley. However, first out of the gate will be ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’, trailers for which have already surfaced.
Based on the documentary of the same name by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the upcoming period drama depicts the real life story of the critically acclaimed celebrity duo Tammy Faye Bakker and her husband Jim Bakker. The couple had a mesmerizing chemistry and remained fan favorite for quite a long time. Nevertheless, at one point, some astounding revelations had messed things up. And, it was when the Bakker’s lives turned wrong way up, crashing the fantasy.
Backstory
For those who are oblivious to the aforementioned names, Tammy Faye Baker and Jim Bakker were the celebrity couple and televangelists, who gained recognition with ‘The PTL Club’ a Christian television program that, ran between 1974 and 1987.
However, in 1989, Jim Bakker was indicted, convicted, and imprisoned on numerous counts of fraud and conspiracy in 1989 and at that time; Tammy Bakker had garnered significant publicity. Later, she had divorced Bakker in 1992 and married Roe Messner.
Besides being an evangelist, Tammy Bakker was also a singer, talk show host, and author. She was mostly renowned for her eccentric and glamorous persona, as well as for moral views that diverged from those of many mainstream Evangelists.
Moreover, in 1996, Tammy Bakker was diagnosed with colon, from which she suffered intermittently for over a decade, before dying of the disease in 2007.
To pay acknowledgment to the media mogul, a documentary of the name similar to the film was released in 2000. Narrated by drag queen RuPaul, the 80-minute film set out to redeem Tammy Faye’s public image after divorcing Jim Bakker in 1992 and going on to marry Roe Messner.
And, after more than a decade of her demise, another Tammy and Jim Bakker centered film is all set to captivate the audience.
