1. In The Shadow of The Moon

2019 running success In the shadow of the moon is a mind-twisting, crime and sci-fi film, that premiered from Netflix and now names among the best sci-fi movies on the platform.

Directed by Jim Mickle and written by Gregory Weidman, ‘In the shadow of the moon’ is a spine-chilling saga of a serial killer, who strangely appears after every nine years, unchanged, and destroys rows of human lives.

Hence, it is only a matter of time, the mystifying case transforms into an obsession for Police officer Thomas Lockhart as he sets great lengths to capture the time-traveller female culprit. However, when the perpetrator and her motives finally unveil in front of Lockhart, his life turns upside down, and the serial killer isn’t the offender anymore.

 2. Children of Men

Children of men is a 2006’s action packed, sci-fi flick, directed by Alfonso Cuarón and adapted from the P.D. James’s novel of the same name.

In the year 2027, after 18 years of total human infertility, war and global depression pushes society to the point of collapse as humanity faces the grim reality of extinction. The United Kingdom, one of the few remaining nations with a functioning government, is deluged by refugees fleeing from chaos in their own countries. In response to this mass influx, the UK has become a police state as the British Army arrests, imprisons, or executes illegal immigrants.

Moreover, as the story precedes, Theo Faron, a former activist turned cynical bureaucrat, is kidnapped by the Fishes, a militant immigrant rights group, led by his Ex-wife Julian, for a huge sum of money.

However, when Julian dies an apparently accidental yet preplanned death and a member of Fishes is discovered to be pregnant, the ray of hope for human life’s continuation couldn’t go unnoticed by Theo, and he does everything he can to protect the unborn human life from being a specimen of human researchers, though it costs his own existence.

One of the best and highly applauded sci-fi movies, Under the skin, follows the tale of a mysterious young woman, who is instead an extraterrestrial, disguised as human. The shadowy creature drives around Scotland at the evening, attempting to lure unsuspecting men into her van. Once there, she seduces and sends them into another dimension where they are nothing more than meat.  

4. Inception

One of the highest grossing and majorly acclaimed sci-fi movies Inception was brought to life by Christopher Nolan.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb, a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets. Hence, Cobb is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased, but as payment for the implantation of another person’s idea into a target’s subconscious. Cobb agrees onto it, however, the future of this expedition is loaded with mysteries, killings, betrayals, and heartbreaks.

5. Extinction

Another of the Netflix’s sci-fi movies production, Extinction is the narrative of Peter, an engineer, who has recurring nightmares in which he and everyone he knows suffer through violent, alien invasion-like confrontations with an unknown enemy. This causes him to have a strained relationship with his wife, Alice, and his daughters Hanna and Lucy. He reluctantly visits a clinic to receive psychiatric help, only to find a patient there who reveals that he is having the same visions, and that the psyches would only suppress these visions. This prompts Peter to believe his visions are of an upcoming invasion, which is indeed true.

Black Box is another of American horror, sci-fi movies directed by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr. and written by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr. and Stephen Herman. One of the best sci-fi movies, Black Box carries the story of two identities, captured in brain of Nolan, a single father, who after suffering through tormenting visions, amnesia and split personalities, finally discovers an ugly, dark truth of past, and is now strong-minded on ending the second, scientifically placed existence of Thomas from his mind.
