Finally, dexamethasone, a widely available highly inexpensive drug belonging to corticosteroids group is found to be effective against the lethal Coronavirus.
Dexamethasone, known by its trade name Decadron, Dectancyl and Dexonal or generic names Dexasone and Hexadrol is a SAID (Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug), administered orally or through IV route, used to treat wide variety of diseases including allergies, eye problems, brain swelling, cardiac diseases, skin diseases and even cancer. Dexamethasone was examined for treating Coronavirus patients due to its effectiveness against Lung diseases including Tuberculosis and Asthma. The steroidal drug is also a successful treatment for Rheumatic diseases i.e. immune-mediated disorders that adds to the reasons for the drug to be potent in Covid-19 patients.
Dexamethasone was on the list of drugs tested by the “UK’s Recovery trial” from March to June to fight deadly Coronavirus. A low dosage of drug was tested on a mass of patients, given one time a day for 10 days. The analysis of this experiment was:
“Dexamethasone helped reduce death rate by one-third in ventilated patients and by one-fifth in patients receiving oxygen supply only.”

Peter Hornby, chief investigator of the trial and a professor of Infectious diseases at University of Oxford declared:
“Dexamethasone is the first drug to be shown to improve survival in COVID-19.”
Moreover, Health Secretary Matt Hancock stated:
“The UK government has been stockpiling the drug since March after we spotted the early signs of its potential and that it now has 200,000 courses at its disposal. We’re working with the NHS so that the NHS standard treatment for COVID-19 will include dexamethasone from this afternoon.”
Matt Hancock, took it to social platform, appreciating the scientists of Britain for their amazing efforts saying:
Dexamethasone is not affected by severity of the disease, providing same effects on all type of patients, indicating it works by treating particular symptoms rather than the virus itself.
The news has been all over the internet since the moment it was announced and it has given a ray of hope to people all over the world.
