There is a severe shortage of over-the-counter painkiller, Panadol, in Pakistan and many citizens are looking for alternatives as they are unable to find the medication at pharmacies across the country.
According to the details, the nationwide Panadol shortage is the result of increased demand due to rising number of dengue cases and other waterborne diseases caused by severe flooding across the country.
Panadol is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and it is one of the go-to medications for people of Pakistan during a fever or headaches. However, Panadol is just a brand name and the generic composition for the over-the-counter painkiller is ‘Paracetamol’.
It is pertinent to mention that shortage of Panadol in Pakistan also stems from the reduction in the monthly production of the drug by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as the company found it less profitable due to increase in cost of raw materials and government’s control over the prices.
GSK produced over 450 million tablets of Panadol each month, however, the company has reduced the production to a bare minimum until further notice.
Many people are unaware that several Panadol alternatives are available in Pakistan as Paracetamol is being sold under different brand names and works the same as Panadol, which is only a brand name for the medication by its manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
