The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken significant measures to curb the spread of obscene and blasphemous content on social media. According to a report submitted to the Peshawar High Court, the PTA has blocked 113,133 TikTok accounts since 2020. This action underscores the PTA’s commitment to maintaining a safer digital environment.
Since 2020, TikTok has seen over 114,015 uploads of explicit videos in Pakistan. In response, the PTA has been vigilant, blocking 2,463 posts featuring blasphemous material. The efforts didn’t stop there; in 2023 alone, 25,267 instances of explicit content were reported on TikTok, leading to the blocking of 24,800 accounts that posted or shared such content.
PTA’s regulatory actions span across other social media platforms. The report highlights a total of 1,389,181 cases of reported obscene content across various platforms, with 1,303,578 links blocked. This includes blocking 147,579 links on Facebook, 22,357 on Instagram, 125,600 on TikTok, 53,162 on YouTube, and 53,842 on X.
The PTA continues to collaborate with social media companies to mitigate the spread of inappropriate and blasphemous material, reinforcing its dedication to a safer online space in Pakistan.
