LAHORE: Good news for Lahore, The government of Punjab is taking all measures to tackle the smog issue in Punjab. Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz announced that electric buses, with a batch of 27 units manufactured in China set to be shipped to Pakistan.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced on social media, “A fleet of 27 electric buses for Lahore, produced in China, is prepared for shipment. Approximately 600 additional buses for other Punjab districts will follow, Insha’Allah.”

Earlier this year, the Punjab Transport Authority completed the bidding process for these electric buses from China.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan previously stated that a joint venture between a Chinese and a Pakistani firm has been awarded the contract for the bus production.
He noted that the procurement of the 27 electric buses has cost Rs15.5 billion, with the contract covering the establishment of charging facilities.
These buses are provided with an eight-year warranty on their batteries and a ten-year warranty for the body and structural elements.
Furthermore, the company will supply free oversight and maintenance services during the first year of operation, as mentioned by the minister.
These electric buses will initially run on five routes, with the inaugural route connecting the Railway Station to Hamdard Chowk in Green Town.
In September, a delegation led by Liu Junhua, Chairman of the Chinese vehicle manufacturer Chongqing CRRC Hengtong, met with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to discuss the province’s Green Transport System Project.

The initiative aims to roll out 5,000 electric buses throughout Punjab, beginning with an initial 1,000 in the first phase. Over the next five years, a comprehensive green transport framework will be established in key cities.
Maryam Nawaz expressed her commitment to fully support the project, ensuring that all necessary resources would be available for the production of electric two- and three-wheelers in Punjab.
During discussions, the Chinese delegation proposed a unified charging solution for electric transportation and explored the idea of integrating mini shopping centers at bus stops.
The chief minister stressed the importance of a thorough transport system plan, sharing her vision for a completely green transport network that addresses issues of traffic congestion and environmental degradation.
She underscored the increasing public enthusiasm for electric vehicles and confirmed that Chinese transport firms would receive comprehensive support.
The province’s plans also involve broadening green transport initiatives, including the introduction of bullet trains, metro buses, and electrified bus services in each district.
