Abu Dhabi Police provided clarification that the minimum speed limit of 120 km/h applied on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road since April 2023, is in effect from both directions. The rule is for the two fast lanes, i.e. first and second from the left on the highway. Furthermore, there is a maximum speed limit of 140km/h on the road. Those who will violate the ‘minimum speed limit’ rule in these lanes of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road will have to pay a Dh400 fine.
Significantly, the ‘minimum speed limit’ rule does not apply to the third and final lane as it allows motorists who are driving at slower pace without restrictions. Moreover, any heavy vehicles, using the rightmost lane are exempted from the minimum speed requirement.
The objective of the ‘minimum speed limit’ implementation is to enhance road safety improvement by ensuring slow vehicles use right lanes and give way to faster moving traffic. Firstly, this measure seeks to encourage safer and smoother traffic flow on the road.
Abu Dhabi Police also spoke about safe driving, reminding drivers not to change lanes until the road is clear. Drivers are advised to change lanes when the space between vehicles is wide enough and make use of indicators in lane changes to avoid any untoward incident.
