LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has officially mandated biometric attendance for all staff members stationed in prisons throughout the province, as announced in a statement on Wednesday. This initiative aims to enhance accountability and efficiency within the correctional facilities.
According to the Home Department, senior officers are responsible for ensuring that biometric attendance is recorded for every staff member in their respective jails. Officers and personnel who fail to record their attendance through the biometric system will be marked as absent, emphasizing the importance of compliance with this new policy.
Biometric identification includes various technologies, with fingerprints being the most common. Other methods such as facial recognition, voice-prints, and retinal scanning may also be utilized. The introduction of these advanced systems is designed to streamline operations within the prison system and enhance security protocols.
The biometric attendance system (BAS) was first implemented in 2019 across 40 prisons in Punjab to simplify the identification process for both staff and inmates. This system maintains a comprehensive database that tracks the movements of individuals entering or exiting the facilities, including the transfer of prisoners. This marks a significant shift from the previous manual recording methods, moving towards a fully computerized data management system.
