With a high rate of inflation during Ramadan, a shopkeeper in Karachi’s Jodia Bazaar was selling flour (aata) at a discounted price for the community. However, the shopkeeper was fined by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) for selling flour below the officially prescribed price.
The incident has caused outrage on social media as well as in the community, with Karachi Wholesaler Grocers Group (KWGG) expressing dissatisfaction over the imposed penalty on the shopkeeper. The KWGG has warned of a potential shutdown strike and protest over the unfair treatment.
According to the details, a team from the Deputy Commissioner’s office visited Karachi’s Jodia Bazaar to inspect prices and found out that a shopkeeper was selling flour at a discounted price of Rs. 115 per KG instead of the official rate was Rs. 123 per KG.
The DC’s office ended up imposing a fine on the shopkeeper for trying to provide flour to the people at a discount. The Chairman of the Karachi Wholesaler Grocers Group has emphasized the challenges faced by vendors while adhering to official pricing regulations and trying to help their community.
