LAHORE: A recent sharp increase in driving license fees in Punjab has sparked legal action, with a petition filed in the Lahore High Court challenging its legality. Lawyer Ghulam Rasool Haral filed the plea, arguing that the hike imposed by the caretaker government exceeds its authority and amounts to an unlawful tax increase.
The petition names the caretaker Punjab government and the Inspector General of Punjab as respondents. It argues that the government cannot impose additional taxes or raise prices without proper legislative channels. The petitioner also highlights the significant burden the increased fees place on citizens, particularly considering the breakdown:
- Rs. 150 test fee
- Rs. 1,850 additional fee upon passing the test
- Rs. 480 miscellaneous charges
This brings the total cost of obtaining a Light Transport Vehicle (LTV) license for one year to Rs. 2,480, a substantial increase from previous rates.
The Lahore High Court has issued notices to the respondents, requiring them to respond to the petition’s claims. This legal challenge could potentially lead to a reversal or modification of the fee hike, impacting how residents obtain driving licenses in Punjab.
