Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has given an AED332 million contract for the ‘Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project’, which involves the improvement of traffic flow, and overall connectivity. It will stretch from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road and it will link major traffic corridors like Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.
The project includes a 800 meter long tunnel with four lanes in each direction; this construction is predicted to increase the Umm Suqeim Street’s capacity up by another fifteen thousand vehicles daily each way. Meanwhile, the travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Rd and Al Khail Rd should shorten from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes.

As per instructions from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this project has to grow along with Dubai to meet all the urban needs like smooth traffic flow.
Speaking about the importance of this project, Mattar Al Tayer – Director General of RTA stated that its implementation will greatly improve connectivity between east-west and north-south streets. The 4.6 km project consists of an 800-meter tunnel along Umm Suqeim Street, improvements to the intersection with Al Barsha South Street and construction of a signalized surface junction.
The project targets improved connectivity for four major traffic corridors and anticipates accommodating 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, significantly reducing travel time. Areas like Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills, with an estimated population of around two million, will benefit from this development.
RTA previously completed the initial phase of the project in 2013, covering the sector between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. In 2020, a central 500-meter bridge was opened as part of the Bridges and Roads leading to Dubai Hills Mall Project, capable of handling up to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
In conclusion, the ‘Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project’ represents a strategic initiative by the RTA to enhance Dubai’s traffic infrastructure, catering to the city’s growth and ensuring efficient connectivity across major traffic corridors.
