MANILA: The Aftershocks of an Earthquake struck island off the north of Philippines on Saturday killing eight people and injuring 60 – Philippines officials said.
According to Initial reports, An Earthquake magnitude of 5.4 struck the Batanes island was followed shortly by an aftershock of magnitude 5.9 while another big aftershock struck little later.
The first Quake killed five people while three others were killed in aftershocks – Executive Director of Disaster Agency Ricardo Jalad told media.
“New houses were damaged and the old houses which we were preserving were completely destroyed,” she said, referring to traditional stone homes.
The Philippines is on the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences frequent earthquakes.
