LAHORE: Following an announcement by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the initiative to provide free Wi-Fi services in public spaces across Punjab is being revived.
Free Wifi in Punjab
The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will oversee the project, focusing on restoring existing Wi-Fi hotspots in locations like educational institutions, hospitals, bus stops, and railway stations. Additionally, efforts will be made to identify and expand coverage by designating new hotspot areas and increasing public access to Wi-Fi.
This initiative builds upon previous efforts by the PML-N government in 2013, which introduced free Wi-Fi services in Lahore and other cities. However, the service was discontinued during the subsequent PTI government. While the original project was managed by Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), responsibility for the revived service will now lie with the PITB.
The restoration of this service is expected to significantly benefit the public by providing free internet access in key locations. This will not only foster greater connectivity but also facilitate communication and access to information for the residents of Punjab.
