The caretaker Government is mulling to increase the fixed gas meter rent to Rs. 2,000 per month in order to collect an additional revenue of Rs. 697 billion from consumers during the current fiscal year 2023-24, according to ProPakistani.
According to the details, the fixed gas meter rent, which is currently Rs. 460 per month, will be raised to Rs. 2,000 per month for all non-protected consumers as Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) look to make additional revenue to avoid last year’s staggering losses.
SNGPL and SSGC will direct Rs. 657 billion out of the Rs. 697 billion towards procurement of gas, while a proposal to hike gas tariff by another 100% is on the cards in order to meet the operational expenses of both companies.
The increase in the fixed gas meter rent and the hike in gas prices will put an increased financial burden on the common man during record-high inflation, making it even more difficult to make ends meet.
