PTI Chairman Imran Khan will no longer serve as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, a statement from the Cabinet Division said on Sunday after the dissolution of the National Assembly. However, Imran Khan can continue as the Prime Minister for 15 days until the appointment of a caretaker Prime Minister under Article 224 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
There is no clarification regarding how a caretaker Prime Minister will be appointed as the National Assembly has been dissolved and those responsible for the appointment are no longer in office. However, it must be pointed out that if Imran Khan continues are the Prime Minister of Pakistan, he no longer has the power to make decisions that elected head of state can make.
“Consequent upon dissolution of the National Assembly by the president of Pakistan, in terms of Article 58(1) read with Article 48(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, vide Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs’ SRO No. 487(1)/2022, dated 3rd April, 2022, Mr Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi ceased to hold the Office of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, with immediate effect,” said the notification from the Cabinet Division.

The development comes after the no-confidence motion was rejected by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri for being “unconstitutional” as it was being moved under an international conspiracy. Following the ruling of the Deputy Speaker, President Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of then Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, has approved the advice of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to dissolve the National Assembly under the Article 58 (1) read with Article 48(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
