Given the severe cold weather in the country from the past few weeks, Prime Minister, Imran Khan has directed the governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) to set up temporary shelters for people who were in need of shelter (panahgah) like the homeless.
He made a tweet about this matter saying:
In his tweet Prime Minister, Imran Khan said that he has asked the chief ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to take immediate action and set up shelters (panahgah) so that nobody is left outside in the cold. He also directed them that food should be provided to these people.
Although there are shelters already established at different locations in Lahore and parts of the capital, this step is being taken to ensure that everyone gets a place to sleep because existing shelters might have trouble accommodating too many people due to the extreme cold weather.
This was one of the promises the current government of Imran Khan made to the people when it came into power and that was to establish these shelters for poor and homeless in areas of Punjab, KPK and the federal capital.
Punjab government already has a few shelters (panahgah) set up in different cities. There are almost five of these shelters in Lahore around Railway Station, Thokar Niaz Baig, Lorry Adda and Data Darbar and the government is working on more shelters.
According to the Punjab government, there will be shelters (panahgah) established in 36 districts and the KPK government is also working on the same to provide shelter to the poor and homeless people.
This is a very good step being taken by the government of Imran Khan to accommodate such people in this severe cold weather who otherwise will be left outside in the cold.
