The Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) has closed a bakery in Islamabad’s Lehtrar Centre after a surprise inspection revealed serious health and safety violations. Deputy Director Operations of IFA, Dr. Tahira Saddique, stated that the inspection, conducted by food safety teams found the use of rotten eggs, poor sanitation, and unhygienic conditions.
The inspection team discovered that the bakery was using 2,000 dirty hatchery eggs in their sweets that were destroyed. These cheap eggs from hatcheries were not the only problem as there were several unsanitary practices being carried out at the bakery.
Dr. Tahira highlighted the severe lack of cleanliness, adding that live and dead flies were in the processing area and sweets, as well as rusted and dirty machines. The bakery also used non-food grade paper for packaging and stored sweets in broken, rusty trays.
These conditions posed serious health risks to consumers, leading to the bakery’s closure and the destruction of all defective products. Dr. Tahira emphasized that using broken and dirty eggs in food preparation is a serious violation of food safety laws. The IFA is also targeting those supplying these substandard eggs.
She warned that using such eggs in bakery products could cause serious stomach and liver diseases. The IFA maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy on food counterfeiting while supporting businesses that adhere to high-quality standards. Dr. Tahira reiterated the authority’s commitment to ensuring public health and safety by taking firm action against any violations.
