The capital administration has recently adjusted the weight of Roti from 120 grams to 100 grams, while maintaining its price at Rs. 16. However, the price and weight of Naan will remain unchanged at Rs. 20 for 120 grams.
This decision came after discussions with the Capital Naanbai Association, where it was noted that in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a Rs. 16 Roti weighed 100 grams, leading to the adjustment in weight to align with these standards.
Regarding a petition filed against the reduction in Roti and Naan prices, the Islamabad High Court dismissed it after the district administration revised the notification. The court acknowledged the withdrawal of the previous notification that had been challenged, rendering the petition moot.
The petitioner had questioned the legality of the government notification reducing Roti and Naan prices. The court admitted the petition for hearing and summoned the ICT administration within 24 hours to present their case.
The Punjab government had initially issued a notification in mid-April, reducing the price of Roti, which prompted the ICT administration to follow suit. This decision faced opposition from the Capital Naanbai Association, arguing that the district magistrate lacked the authority to issue such notifications under the Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Act, 1977.
The petitioner’s counsel emphasized that only the federal government had the authority to issue such notifications under Section 3 of the Act, urging the court to invalidate the notification due to its issuance by an incompetent authority.
