A chicken and egg shortage is expected in the twin cities as the poultry association issued a call for a shutdown in Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Wednesday, protesting against uniform chicken rates in Punjab, as reported by ARY News.
Poultry vendors ceased chicken supply in the twin cities, and the Mandi Bagh Sardaran wholesale market experienced a complete shutdown until the local administration addressed the concerns raised by the poultry association.
According to a spokesperson for the Poultry Union, wholesalers, retailers, and suppliers are united in their stance on pricing, asserting that they cannot afford to sell chicken meat below cost.
The spokesperson emphasized that the sale of chicken meat in the market would remain suspended until the pricing issue was resolved by local authorities, which may lead to shortage of chicken and possibly egg in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Anticipating a significant spike in chicken and egg prices in December 2022 due to a shortage of soybean meal, the spokesperson warned that chicken prices could reach Rs1,000 per kilogram, and a dozen eggs could cost up to Rs500. This shortage was attributed to delays in clearing soybean and canola seed shipments at the port, a situation exacerbated by the federal government’s negligence.
Expressing their dissatisfaction, the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) and All Pakistan Solvent Extractors’ Association (APSEA) staged a protest at the Karachi Press Club (KPC). APSEA chairman Mian Muhammad Ahmed highlighted that four ships carrying soybean meal were stranded at the port due to delays in clearance, adversely affecting poultry farms and various industries.
