Senior journalist Hamid Mir has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the recent internet slowdown and the installation of a firewall in Pakistan.
The petition, submitted through his lawyer Imaan Mazari, names the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) and the Ministry for Human Rights as respondents.
Mir is pushing for an injunction to halt the installation of the firewall, which he argues violates the fundamental rights of citizens. He contends that such measures should only proceed after consulting stakeholders and ensuring the protection of these rights.

The petition also highlights the need for internet access for livelihood purposes to be recognized as a fundamental human right under Pakistan’s Constitution. Additionally, Mir has requested that the court demand a detailed report from the relevant authorities on the firewall installation.
The journalist expressed concern that the firewall installation has drastically reduced internet speed, particularly affecting the youth, who play a vital role in the country’s digital economy.
This legal action follows recent discussions by the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology, led by Palwasha Khan, regarding the ongoing internet service disruptions. Senator Afnan Ullah Khan reported that these disruptions have resulted in a $500 million loss for freelancers and digital agencies, further harming Pakistan’s struggling economy.
The committee has requested a comprehensive report on the matter within two weeks.
