ISLAMABAD: A day after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers were apprehended within the premises of Parliament, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq strongly reprimanded Islamabad Inspector General (IG) of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, calling for the immediate release of the detained parliamentarians.
In a firm directive issued on Tuesday, Speaker Sadiq emphasized, “You cannot arrest anyone from the Parliament House or lodges. These parliamentarians must be released immediately.”
The reprimand follows the arrest of PTI lawmakers after a heated speech by PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan during a session of the National Assembly earlier that day. Sadiq expressed deep concern over the situation, saying, “I am very saddened by this incident.” He also confirmed that he had reviewed footage of PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat’s arrest, questioning the manner in which the lawmaker was detained. “What way was it to arrest a parliamentarian?” Sadiq asked IG Rizvi.
The Speaker stressed that the arrests of lawmakers would not be overlooked. “I will not remain silent. Whatever happened in the Parliament will be protested. I have ordered all the videos and summoned the leadership of all political parties.”
In response to the incident, Sadiq took swift action, summoning IG Islamabad, DIG Operations, and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations to the chamber for an urgent meeting.
“I will file a case against those involved in yesterday’s incident,” he asserted, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
The arrests and Sadiq’s response have sparked significant political tension, as the Speaker called for a serious investigation into the actions that transpired within the sacred grounds of Parliament.
