ISLAMABAD: A rare celestial event, the Super Blue Moon, will grace Pakistan’s sky tonight, Monday, August 19, 2024, at 11:26 pm.
According to the Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). This will be the first of four Super Moons set to appear this year, with the next sightings on September 18, October 17, and November 15, 2024.
Here’s the detail about What is Super Blue Moon?
A Super Blue Moon occurs when the moon appears 14% larger and brighter due to its closer proximity to Earth, creating a spectacular visual experience. The moon will be approximately 226,000 miles from Earth tonight, offering a breathtaking sight.
While the term “Blue Moon” often confuses people into thinking the moon might change color, it actually originates from a unique event in the 19th century when a volcanic eruption caused atmospheric conditions that gave the full moon a bluish hue. Since then, the phrase “Once in a Blue Moon” has been used to describe rare events.
The Super Moon phenomenon occurs because the moon’s orbit around Earth is not perfectly circular, so at certain points, it comes closer to our planet.
Tonight’s Super Blue Moon, classified as a Seasonal Blue Moon, won’t be seen again until year 2037.
Although the moon doesn’t physically grow in size, it will appear larger and more vivid in the night sky. NASA explains that this happens when the moon, in either its full or new phase, aligns with its closest approach to Earth.
Prepare for a rare and beautiful night as the Super Blue Moon lights up the sky over Pakistan!
