Karachi faces a potential chicken shortage as the Poultry Shopkeepers, Retailers, and Wholesalers Association instigates a city-wide shutter-down strike. The protest, prompted by perceived “unnecessary fines and arrests,” has led wholesalers to suspend chicken supplies to vendors.
Retailers have joined the strike until their demands are met. The association claims that administration-issued price lists do not align with on-the-ground realities, creating challenges for poultry vendors.
In Sindh and Balochistan, the association argues against selling chicken at a fixed rate and urges daily price list updates. Nationwide, poultry associations oppose authorities’ imposition of uniform chicken rates. Recently, Rawalpindi and Islamabad’s associations protested similar rates in Punjab through a shutter-down strike last month.
