Karachi police is set to buy breathalyzer kits amid growing number of drunk driving incidents to ensure proper check of alcoholism in suspected drivers.
According to the administrative officer at the DIG Traffic Police Office, DSP Saeed Arain, a tender has already been forwarded to the procurement department for approval of purchasing 90 breathalyzer kits.
These breathalyzer kits will be provided to the personnel deployed in different parts of Karachi and this initiative will be expanded to other districts of the province.
Currently, the police use conventional methods to determine whether a driver is under the influence of alcohol or not, which includes the suspected person being taken to government hospitals where tests are conducted.
However, with the availability of breathalyzer kits, the Karachi police “would be able to test drivers on the spot and issue challan or arrest them,” added DSP Arain.
This will help discourage drivers others from driving under the influence of alcohol and help save many lives in the process.
