In a hearing related to smog cases on Tuesday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) instructed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to levy heavy fines as penalties for wasting water in Lahore. Justice Shahid Karim, presiding over the proceedings, mandated a minimum fine of Rs1 million on industries found guilty of repeated violations.
In compliance with these directives, commercial and domestic users will now face heavy fine of Rs20,000 and Rs10,000, respectively, for the unnecessary water wastage in the city of Lahore.
Media reports indicate that Justice Karim further instructed officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to refer cases of factories that were self-unsealed to the judicial commission.
In response to the court’s orders, action has been initiated against environmental officers. A member of the judicial commission accused these officials of accepting bribes, revealing that environmentally harmful factories operate during nighttime.
