The Lahore High Court (LHC) dismissed a petition seeking to halt this year’s Aurat March, filed by citizen Azam Butt. Justice Shahid Karim announced the decision, rejecting Azam’s argument that the march’s banners and cards were unsuitable for an Islamic society.
Scheduled for International Women’s Day on March 8, the Aurat March advocates for women’s rights under the theme “Siyasat, Muzahamat aur Azadi” (Politics, Resistance, and Independence), aiming to address political issues and empower marginalized groups.
Since 2018, the Aurat March has drawn both support and opposition. Critics accuse organizers of promoting Western values and disregarding cultural norms, while advocates argue for women’s rights in a society where they face severe consequences for perceived dishonor.
Last year, the Lahore district administration initially denied permission for the rally but reached an agreement on time and venue after a legal challenge and LHC intervention. Despite opposition, the march continues annually as a platform to raise awareness of women’s issues and advocate for gender equality.
