Main Roads in Murree Cleared For All Types of Traffic

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Sunday confirmed in a statement that all main roads in Murree have been cleared for all types of traffic, including Kuldana-Barian Road, while efforts for evacuating the stranded tourists are also underway.

The ISPR said that after clearance of main roads, the army engineers are now focusing on clearing road links. “Relief camps / medical facilities are fully operating and army transport is plying for moving stranded tourists to Rawalpindi / Islamabad.” the ISPR added.

Moreover, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) personnel are also actively taking part in the ongoing rescue and relief operations in Murree. The PAF officials have so far shitted more than 100 stranded tourists, including women and children at the PAF Base Kalabagh and Lower Topa Base.

CM Buzdar Orders Inquiry

The Punjab Chief Minister Usman Sardar Buzdar has ordered a high-level inquiry into the tragic incident that took place in Murree and formed a committee headed by the Punjab Additional Chief Secretary (Home), tasking it to submit its report with seven days.

The Chief Minister said that indiscriminate action would be taken against those found responsible for negligence leading to the incident in Murree. He also added that 2 new Police Stations will be established in Murree as well.

In addition, Parking plazas in Sunny Bank and Jhika Gali will be set up along with a shuttle service between these points.

Government Announces Compensation

The Punjab Government has announced financial assistance of Rs. 17.6 million for the families of those who lost their lives in the blizzard.

Murree Incident

According to the report, at least 22 tourists died because to carbon monoxide poisoning while trapped in their vehicles due to heavy snowfall in Murree.

The report stated that on 7 January 2022, four to six feet of snow fell in Murree Hill Station and caused a blockage of roads for traffic. There were more than 100,000 vehicles which entered the city over the past three days and several tourists were stuck on the roads due to blockage.

The deceased belonged to Karachi, Lahore, Mardan and other cities.
