US Senator Martha McSally has served the military for twenty six years. She opened up at the hearing of Senate Committee on Armed Services to prevent sexual assaults and improve the response when they occur.
The Arizona Republican said at first she was afraid and confused. She also said she was ashamed and blamed herself.
Later when she complained to the military officials she felt the system was raping her all over again.
She said sexual harassment was prevalent when she first joined the Air Force Academy in the ninth class of women. The victims mostly suffered in silence.
The Senate Committee heard her silently as she read the notes she had prepared. The committee lauded her courage for coming forward to raise the issue.

She also spoke of her pride in the military and serving for the country. Also spoke of her deep pain caused due to suffering the abuse.

Senator Martha McSally also admitted it is difficult to discuss the issue in public as it brings back the memories of what had happened, but she was glad she did.
