Maryam Al Hammadi has made history by becoming the first Emirati woman to serve as an air traffic control officer (ATCO) in Sharjah. Her exceptional performance is attributed to her dedication and the fact that she can quickly adapt to a challenging environment and perform the job as the Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requires.
Within three years of joining the Department of Civil Aviation in Sharjah (DCA), Al Hammadi successfully completed various courses and earned certifications, including ICAO 051, ICAO 052, ATCO Pre-OJT, ATCO OJT, and the ATCO proficiency testing exam. Her success underscores the effectiveness of the Emiratisation program at DCA, which prioritizes providing equal opportunities for both male and female citizens to excel in diverse fields while offering continuous support and training for skill enhancement and professional growth.
Assigned to manage aircraft operations at the air traffic control tower in Sharjah Airport, Al Hammadi ensures the safe and efficient movement of flights. Notably, the Air Control Department at Sharjah Airport handled over 104,000 flights last year, averaging 364 flights per day.
Sheikh Khalid bin Essam Al Qasimi, the Chairman of Sharjah Civil Aviation Department, stated his pride on Al Hammadi’s success, and highlighted DCA’s approach in empowering women in different sectors in line with the leadership vision regarding sustainable economic growth.
Maryam Al Hammadi expressed her pride in being the first Emirati female ATCO in Sharjah, acknowledging the increased responsibility that comes with her accomplishment and pledging to further contribute to the advancement of the aviation sector in the UAE.
