LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department announced the suspension of mobile phone services in 21 districts across the province on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. This decision, aims to ensure security during the religious observance.
The suspension will impact several key areas, including Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Muzaffargarh, DG Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Layyah, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Rajanpur. Mobile services in these districts will be unavailable, particularly in sensitive zones. Muzaffargarh also faces an extended suspension, covering the 7th and 10th of Muharram.
Meanwhile, other districts such as Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Sargodha, Khushab, Chiniot, Multan, Khanewal, Vehari, Sahiwal, Okara, Pakpattan, and Lodhran will continue to have mobile service availability.
This measure complements the federal government’s decision to deploy armed forces nationwide during Muharram. Authorities in Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir have requested military assistance to maintain law and order. The federal government, under Article 245 of the Constitution, approved the deployment of army troops and civil armed forces to ensure peace and security.
Ashura, a significant day in the Islamic calendar, will be observed in Pakistan on July 17, Wednesday. The heightened security measures and cellphone service suspension aim to prevent any disruptions and ensure the safety of all citizens during this solemn period.
