PESHAWAR: In preparation for the upcoming observance of Muharram, mobile phone services will be temporarily suspended in several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
This decision follows a request from local police authorities to the home ministry, seeking the suspension on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram.
Security measures have been intensified across the province to ensure comprehensive safety during this period. The federal government has also approved the deployment of armed forces nationwide in response to similar requests from authorities in Sindh, Balochistan, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Under Article 245 of the Constitution, the Centre has authorized the deployment of army and civil armed forces to maintain peace and security during this sensitive time.
Ashura, observed on July 17 (Wednesday) this year, marks the 10th day of Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
In addition to the mobile service suspension, the provincial government of Sindh has imposed a ban on pillion riding for the duration of the 10-day Muharram period.
Authorities emphasize these measures are crucial to ensuring public safety and preserving peace during religious observances.
