LAHORE: The Punjab government has taken a significant step towards addressing the province’s persistent smog problem, authorities announced that M-tags will no longer be issued to vehicles lacking valid fitness certificates.
Additionally, vehicles older than 30 years will be prohibited from entering Lahore and using motorways from October to January, aligning with the government’s broader efforts to reduce pollution during peak smog season.
To obtain an M-tag, vehicle owners must now present the registration book, driver’s license, and a valid fitness certificate.

Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan stated that this initiative stems from the alarming smog conditions the province has endured. “We have also requested the Services and General Administration Department to provide details of government vehicles to ensure compliance,” he added.
Minister Khan emphasized that the implementation of fitness certification will start with government-owned vehicles, underscoring the administration’s commitment to lead by example. “It’s unacceptable to enforce rules on citizens while allowing government agencies to remain lax,” he asserted.
These regulations will apply uniformly to both commercial and private vehicles.
