Pakistan Railways has announced an increase in train fares for both passenger and freight trains effective July 19, 2024, due to the recent hike in petroleum prices in Pakistan. According to the details, the ticket prices for passenger trains have been raised by 1%, while freight trains will see a 2% rise in their fares.
It is pertinent to mention that the government announced an increase of Rs. 9.99 per litre in the price of petrol, while the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) was raised by Rs. 6.18 per litre. The current price of petrol is Rs. 275.60 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) is being sold for Rs. 283.63 per litre.
Pakistan Railways has stated that the increase in train fares applies to all classes of passenger trains, including economy, AC standard, AC business, AC parlor, express, intercity, and those running under a public-private partnership.
It also bears mentioning that Pakistan Railways provided to relief in ticket prices to passengers when petroleum prices saw a reduction during the last few fortnights. However, the train fares have seen an immediate hike when the government raised petroleum prices.
Furthermore, the fares for freight trains were already increased by 3% on July 3, 2024, which makes the recent hike the second one in just one month. It should be mentioned that Pakistan Railways revenue figures for the financial year 2023-24 showed a record revenue of Rs. 88 billion, a growth of 40% over the previous year.
