Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the dissolution of the National Assembly (NA) on August 9, three days before the lower house of the parliament would complete its five-year term.
The decision was taken after Shehbaz Sharif met with parliamentary leaders of the allied parties in the coalition government at a dinner hosted in honor of the members of parliament and discussed the country political situation.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sought everyone’s input and discussed the arrangements of the caretaker prime minister and the caretaker government, which is a crucial step and part of the democratic process to ensure a smooth transition of power before the next general elections.
It is pertinent to mention that after dissolution of the National Assembly (NA) on August 9, it is mandatory that general elections be held within 90 days.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will send an advise to the President for the dissolution of the National Assembly, which will stand dissolved as soon as the President gives his signature as per the Constitution.
However, if the President, for any reason, decides to not sign the advise, the NA will automatically stand dissolved after 48 hours of receiving the Prime Minister’s advise as per Constitutional experts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that after three days of consultation with the opposition, he will submit the name for a caretaker prime minister to the President. However, if no agreement is reached, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will step in and nominate a candidate for the position of caretake prime minister.
The PM has assured to creating a caretaker government that would be acceptable to all stakeholders.
