Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif awarded a Rs 150 million reward for Pakistan’s star athlete, Arshad Nadeem, following his historic performance at the Paris Olympics. During a special dinner held in Nadeem’s honor.
The Prime Minister also announced that the road connecting the F9 and F10 sectors in Islamabad will be renamed in honor of Arshad Nadeem, the javelin champion who brought immense pride to Pakistan with his historic achievements.
This gesture serves not only as a tribute to Nadeem’s remarkable contributions to the nation’s sporting legacy but also as an inspiration for future generations to pursue excellence in athletics.
The renaming of the road is a symbolic recognition of Nadeem’s dedication and success, forever linking his name with the capital city.
In addition to the financial reward, Prime Minister Sharif announced that Nadeem would be conferred with the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, one of the country’s highest civilian awards.
Furthermore, a high-performance academy will be established at Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad, dedicated to Nadeem, to support and nurture future athletes.
The announcements were made during a celebratory event where Arshad Nadeem was accompanied by his family and coach, Salman Iqbal Butt. During his speech, Nadeem, who recently made history with a record-breaking 92.97-metre throw, shared his excitement and gratitude. He announced that his next target is to break the world record.
Nadeem’s victory is a monumental achievement for Pakistan, marking the country’s first individual gold medal in track and field and only the second time a South Asian athlete has claimed a podium finish in this category.
Expressing his joy, Nadeem said, “I’m thrilled that God blessed me with the gold medal, and we will celebrate August 14th with this achievement. It’s heartwarming to return to Pakistan and receive such immense love.”
He also expressed his deep appreciation for the warm reception from the Prime Minister and the public, saying, “This respect motivates athletes to work harder and achieve more.”
Reflecting on his Olympic journey, Nadeem shared that he had felt confident after his intense preparations. Despite an initial foul in the final, his determination paid off with his record-breaking throw. “When I took the second throw, I invoked God’s name, and as soon as the javelin left my hand, I knew it was over 90 metres,” he said.
Earlier today, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited Nadeem’s home to personally congratulate him and awarded him a cheque for Rs 100 million in recognition of his outstanding achievement.
Nadeem concluded his speech by reaffirming his commitment to continue training rigorously for future competitions, aiming to set a new world record in javelin.
