A lot of protesters surrounded the Gurdwara Nankana Sahib demanding the release of suspects who had reports say, allegedly converted a Sikh woman to Islam by force.
According to reports, the matter has now been resolved and the protesters have dispersed after the arrested persons were released following successful negotiations with government representatives.
Gurdwara Nankana Sahib is considered one of the most religious places in the Sikh religion and the birth place of Guru Nanak.
The protests occurred after the arrest of a suspect named Ehsan who was accused of allegedly kidnapping and converting a 19 year old Sikh woman to Islam and marrying her. The protest was led by Ehsan’s family to demand for his release.
Capt. Amarinder Singh, Indian CM Punjab also tweeted to PM Imran Khan to help the Sikhs stranded in Gurdwara Nankana Sahib during the protests.
An FIR (First Information Report) was filed in the Nankana police station regarding this incident and police were able to trace down the suspect and arrest him in Lahore.
Reports say, that the woman had submitted a statement in court saying that she had converted to Islam and married Ehsan of her own free will and that she was getting death threats from her own family.
The court ordered the woman to be shifted to Darul Aman Shelter after the Sikh community demanded that she be brought back.
Ehsan’s sister had told the media:
Today, police personnel raided our home and arrested my brother and relatives after torturing them,
Even claiming that police also tortured the woman and children present in the house pressuring them ahead of a court hearing on January 9.
However, according to reports, talks have been held between Pir Sarwar Shah, the PTI Nankana Sahib president after which the protestors have dispersed.
Twitter has been trending with the hashtag #NankanaSahib with over 41,000 tweets being made in a few hours.
